Jamie Garventa – Region II Representative
Jamie Garaventa has been an educator in Northern Nevada for 8 years. After receiving her Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education she began her teaching career as an educator working for an outdoor environmental education non-profit: Sierra Nevada Journeys. Her passion for science was ignited during her five years working in informal environmental science. The ability to develop curriculum that connected science standards to hands-on experiential learning paved the way for Jamie to develop a deeper understanding of the NGSS and Common Core standards, with a heavy focus on integrating science content and literacy skills.
After receiving her Masters in Teacher Leadership, Jamie applied her skills to professional development trainings including presenting at national and regional NSTA conferences. After leaving Sierra Nevada Journeys, Jamie took a position with Washoe County School District as a sixth-grade teacher. During her time as a classroom teacher, Jamie has continued to expand her knowledge of science content and integration of NGSS with all areas in the curriculum. She makes a point to develop science practices integrating science content across multidisciplinary curriculum through Project Based Learning.
Currently Jamie has focused her instruction on NGSS and the newly adopted Computer Science Standards. Jamie has worked with teachers from Washoe County School District to develop curriculum and instruction that promotes collaboration, skilled communication, and critical thinking through NGSS, Computer Science, and other content areas.
