About Me
Sylvia Scoggin earned her B.S. in Civil Engineering from the University of Colorado, Boulder, and a Masters’ in Business Administration from the University of Oregon, Eugene. When she came to Reno in 1992, she worked part-time in the Alternative Education program at McQueen High School, helping students recuperate math and science credits in self-guided units. This ignited her passion for teaching. After earning her teaching credential, she taught for twenty-one years at McQueen High School, teaching classes such as Biology, Science Inquiry, Physical Science, Environmental Science, and AP Physics 1. She served six years as Department Leader, mentored first year science teachers, oversaw pre-service teachers, and established the school’s first STEAM club. In 2004, she earned her National Board Certification in Science, Biology, and then proceeded to devote the next eleven years to facilitate the journey of K-12 teachers in various content areas to becoming Board Certified. After recertifying in 2014, she focused on assisting teachers who were recertifying.

In July of 2016, she accepted the position as K-12 Science Program Coordinator for Washoe County School District. The position was amended in 2018 to Secondary Science Program Facilitator in order to allow her to focus on middle and high school science teachers. In this position, she provides support for science teachers by developing and implementing professional learning opportunities to ensure high quality science instruction for students. In broad terms, she serves as an advocate for science within the development and deployment of courses and district initiatives. As president of NSSTA, she hopes to build a community of science educators, both regionally and state-wide, who can support each other and advocate in unison for strong science instruction throughout Nevada.
